challenge_600

Have you heard? The Hero Arts website is getting a whole new look September 1st. We can’t wait to share it all with you. Soon…very soon!

In anticipation of the website makeover, we thought it would be fun to host a challenge with that same theme in mind. So starting today and continuing through September 20th, we invite you to give one of your old projects a makeover. Take a trip down memory lane, select an existing project as inspiration, and change it up somehow to create a new project. Change it a little or a lot…it’s totally up to you! The most important thing is to have fun in the process.

  • All project types are welcome — cards, tags, scrapbook pages, mixed media, DIY projects, etc.
  • Please use at least one Hero Arts stamp, die, or digital image on each project you submit.
  • We’d love to see photos of both your old (before) and new (after) projects.
  • BIG PRIZES! At the conclusion of the challenge, we will select four winners (three of our favorite projects; one randomly chosen) and award each a $50 Hero Arts Online Store shopping spree with free shipping. Winners will be able to select any products offered in the new online store (coming September 1st!)

Ready to join the fun? Enter up to five different projects, now through September 20, 2015, by adding your new project links below via the InLinkz tool. (Look for the blue “Add Your Link” button.)

Happy stamping!

Have a Happy Day

August 12th, 2015 by hero

Hello! One of the style of cards that I like a lot are the clean and simple.  So I made one for today, featuring a pretty set called Color Layering Happy Day Flowers.

mgrigsby_33-1-copy

Find out how to make this card — click for complete supplies and instructions.

What I like about this style of cards is that, once you have decided the design, they are very quick to make and replicate. :) This style also embraces the use of white space, which makes your cards look clean and elegant.  For this card, I used a plain white card base, and I simply stamped the flower using two different ink colors. The sentiment was stamped on a paper strip, and I used it as a second layer over the stamped flowers. At the end, I embellished the card with a few gemstones and pearls.

Happy Day Card by Mariana Grigsby for Hero Arts

If you have not tried this style yet, I recommend you to do it. At the beginning, it can be hard trying not to use all those inks, stamps, and tools that you have, but once you understand the concept, you will love making clean and simple cards.

Thanks for joining me today!

Dauber Stripes

August 11th, 2015 by hero

Hello! With the watercoloring trend still in full force, I used Hero Arts daubers as my coloring medium, to create a colorful, faux watercolor striped background.

dmikasa-millie600

Find out how to make this card — click for complete supplies and instructions.

I simply swiped different colors of daubers across watercolor paper. Paint whimsical stripes without measuring them—the wonkier the better!

dmikasa-dauberstripesdetail

With the different dauber colors available, you can create endless color combinations, depending on the occasion and recipient of the card.

dmikasa-oscarmillie

Give this technique a try and don’t limit yourself to stripes. The sky’s the limit!

And by the way, the cute Millie and Oscar stamp and die sets used on this card are currently on sale! From now until August 17th, you’ll find our complete Lia Griffith Collection on sale in the Hero Arts Online Sale!

Have fun, and hope to see how you used daubers in the Hero Arts Flickr gallery!

Video: Stamped Sentiment Backgrounds

August 10th, 2015 by hero

Hello everyone! Do you love to make your own custom backgrounds? I do and I can never have enough of them! This time I’m experimenting with sentiment stamps from Lia Griffith and stamping several patterns using grey, blue and black inks.

yana-smakula-2015-hero-arts-sentiment-backgrounds-1e

Find out how to make this card — click for complete supplies and instructions.

I intentionally chose stamps from Lia for the fun and playful handwritten fonts. I didn’t want these sentiments to appear as sentiments on my stamped backgrounds but rather as design elements. To achieve this and to make them somewhat hard to read I stamped them a little bit at an angle.

yana-smakula-2015-hero-arts-sentiment-backgrounds-2e

I used a new color combo for me - black, grey, light blue and a hint of gold. One of my backgrounds was stamped using Soft Pool, another one using Charcoal and the last one combined both plus black. You can learn more about using sentiment stamps to make a background in my video below:

If you are having problems viewing the video, please try watching it HERE on YouTube.

I kept the rest of rest of my cards very simple - I die cut a swallowtail butterfly for each, added a gold heat embossed “hello” from Friends by Lia, and tucked in a few leaves from the Color Layering Hibiscus set.

Thanks for stopping by today! Have fun stamping!

Neon Birthday

August 6th, 2015 by libby

Hi everyone! Today I have a happy little birthday card to share with you. I busted out some of my favorite ink pads for this one - my NEONS! Yup, I’m still all-in on the neon trend!

Find out how to make this card — click for complete supplies and instructions.

Another one of my favorites? The fun Tassels set in the Summer Catalog. I love that you can stamp each tassel separately, going every which way. And the messages in the set are great, too. But today, instead of using them, I wanted to give this Happy Birthday to You woodblock message stamp a little love.

One in a Million

August 5th, 2015 by tami

Happy Wednesday! With the start of a new school year just one week away for my kids, today I’m sharing a card that can be made ahead of time to have on hand for a special teacher. Better yet…several special teachers! This design could easily be created assembly line style.

I used selective inking to stamp just the word “thanks” from the Thanks for Being You stamp and then added “you’re one in a million” from the Shoot for the Moon set underneath. I love mixing and matching messages in this way.

oneinmillion_heroarts_500

After the message was complete, the apple was stamped and clear embossed right over the top, then colored with Ink Daubers. Daubers make for super quick and easy watercoloring — just tap onto an acrylic block, mist with water, and paint. The clear embossing keeps the ink inside the lines. Wipe the block clean and you’re done!

Splatters of Gold Shimmer Spray give the background a little extra somethin’-somethin’. :)

Don’t forget to thank those awesome teachers this year! A simple handmade card and heartfelt note mean so much.

Thank you for stopping by. Have a wonderful day!

hero_dt_rewind

Hello and welcome to another Hero Arts Web Design Team Rewind, where we share a sampling of our favorite projects shared on the designers’ personal blogs over the past month!

This month we’d like to highlight a few posts where our creative team showed just how excellent they are at teaching! First is a really fun post from Yana, who shared how to color in stamped images using other stamps! Be sure to visit her blog and check out the video tutorial - it’s fantastic, as usual! We love how the Baby Animals look when they are colored in with Graphic Flowers, and would you believe, fruit and vegetables??

yana-smakula-2015-hero-arts-mice-to-see-you-2-740x493

Mariana shared these absolutely adorable party straw tags, featuring the Baby Elephant woodblock stamp as well as messages from Little One. How sweet would these be at a baby shower? Mariana shared step by step photos to explain how to attach the tags to the straws on her blog post.

mariana_dsc_16011

And last but not least, a wonderfully informative post from Yana, where she shared her favorite color combos when stamping the Color Layering Bird and Branch set. We really love how Mr. Bird looks in purple!
